[1. Call to Order] [00:00:09] I CALL THIS PRE MEETING BRIEFING OF THE CAROLS AND FARMERS BRANCH . I SEE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO ORDER AT SIX PM ON MAY 4TH 2023. THE PURPOSE OF THIS PRE MEETING BRIEFING IS TO CONDUCT A BRIEFING SESSION WITH ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF REGARDING THE POSTED AGENDA FOR THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING SCHEDULED FOR SEVEN O'CLOCK TONIGHT MAY 4TH 2023 FOR THE RECORD. THE BOARD MEMBERS PRESIDENT SALLY DEREK CASSANDRA HATFIELD. TERROR ROBOTIC CAROLINE BENAVIDEZ, ILEANA GARCIA, ROJAS, KIM BRADY AND MYSELF LESS BLACK. AGENDA ITEM NUMBER TWO IS AUDIENCE FOR GUESTS, PERSONS WHO WISH TO SPEAK WE HAVE NO ONE HERE. OKAY SO WE'LL JUST SKIP OVER ITEM [3. Administrative Reports] NUMBER TWO. SINCE WE HAVE NO ONE HERE TO SPEAK FOR AUDIENCE FOR GUESTS. AND I'LL MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM NUMBER THREE, WHICH ARE OUR REPORTS BY ADMINISTRATION. DR ELDRIDGE ARE THERE ANY REPORTS BY ADMINISTRATION? YES SIR. AND DR LANCE HAMLET IS GOING TO TALK ABOUT OUR KICKSTART MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE WOULD LIKE THE BOARD TO CONSIDER THE PURCHASE OF THE KICKSTART MARTIAL ARTS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM 45 OR SIX MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUSES. BARBARA BUSH. THEY'RE BEING FAILED. DAN F LONG, TED POLK AND DO IT, PERRY. AH! ALL OF THESE CANVASES ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THIS PROGRAM FOR MANY, MANY YEARS, LIVING FIELDS KICKED US OFF, SO TO SPEAK, AND 1995. THEN WE ADDED BUSH AND PERRY MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN THE YEAR 4004. WE ADDED DAN F. LONG AND TED POLK MIDDLE SCHOOLS. THESE STUDENTS HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY RIGHT NOW. THEY SERVE OVER 500 STUDENTS IN THIS PROGRAM BY BENEFITING THEM WITH THEIR SUB CONFIDENCE. SELF ESTEEM, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND OVERALL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. THE COST IS SENDING $5000 PER CAMPUS TOTALING $375,000 FOR THE YEAR. THERE YOU GO. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, DOCTOR. HAMLIN BOARD MEMBERS SEE HOW MANY QUESTIONS MR BRADY. HAVE WE SEEN A DECREASE IN DISCIPLINE ISSUES? THROUGH USE OF THIS PROGRAM. THROUGH WHAT? I'M NOT GOING TO SAY WE HAVE A LOT OF DATA THAT WE'VE COLLECTED OVER THE YEARS BECAUSE I HAVEN'T HONESTLY HAVEN'T SEEN IT. BUT I KNOW WHEN YOU TALK WITH OUR PRINCIPLES, THEY WHOLEHEARTEDLY SAY IT HAS DEFINITELY HELPED WITH STUDENT DISCIPLINE. BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY DATA TO SHARE WITH YOU AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU. MR ERIC. FOR THESE PEOPLE THAT ARE EMPLOYED BY KICKSTART ARE EMPLOYED BY THE DISTRICT, OR IS IT LIKE A COMBINATION? THE INSTRUCTOR IS EMPLOYED. IT'S A KICK DRUM. IT'S A KICKSTART EMPLOYEE THAT WE ACTUALLY HAVE ON OUR CAMPUSES. UH AND THEY ARE 100% KICK START WITH WE TRY NOT TO USE THEM FOR ANY OF OUR BUILDING PURPOSES, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY A KICKSTART EMPLOYEE. OKAY, SO THEN YOU JUST AREN'T THEY? WOULD THEY GO THROUGH THE SAME KIND OF, UM, SCREENING AND TRAINING THAT OUR EMPLOYEES WOULD SO THAT WE HAVE VETTED THAT THEY'RE SAFE TO BE IN OUR BUILDINGS? ABSOLUTELY. YES, MA'AM. THANK YOU. VENUS. WHAT TIME IS THE WHAT TIME DO THEY USE. THIS IS A CLASS. IF IT'S A IF THEY HAVE EIGHT PERIODS, THERE'LL BE SIX OF EIGHT PERIOD TODAY. IT'S JUST THE SAME SCHEDULE AS THE CAMPUS IF IT'S ON A BLOG SCHEDULE, AND IT'S THE NEW BLOCK CLASSES, BUT AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, THEY DO THE EXACT SAME TYPE OF SCHEDULE ANY OTHER TEACHER WOULD HAVE. AND HOW MANY STUDENTS DID YOU SAY IT IMPACTED? WE HAVE 565 KIDS THIS YEAR GOING THROUGH THE PROGRAM SCHOOLS? YES, MA'AM. OKAY. THANK YOU. WAS HATFILL. MR HAMMOND. ARE THERE ANY ONGOING EFFORTS TO INCREASE THAT NUMBER OF STUDENTS BASED ON THE CONTRACT? I SAW THEIR OPTIMAL NUMBERS IS BETWEEN 151 175 PER CAMPUS. SO ARE WE HAVING EFFORTS TO INCREASE THAT ENROLLMENT? YES, WE KIND OF GO UP AND DOWN. I MEAN, WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE, UH, THE LENGTH OF HOW LONG WE'VE HAD THAT THE PROGRAMS THEY'RE GONE ANYWHERE FROM 500 TO 750 KIDS. IT'S JUST ONCE AGAIN ABOUT KID INTEREST IF OUR STUDENTS AT SANTA FOR THEIR IN SO WE'VE SEEN SOME YEARS WE'VE ACTUALLY HAD 750 IN THE PROGRAM AT ONE TIME. THANK YOU. THEY REALLY WANT US TO KEEP APOLOGIZE. THEY WANT US TO KEEP THE NUMBERS BELOW 200 FOR EACH CAMPUS. PER YEAR. IT'S BRADY. I THINK I KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS. BUT WHY IS BLAYLOCK NOT INCLUDED IN THAT? GOOD QUESTION. UH YOU KNOW WHEN, WHEN, UH. THE PROGRAM ITSELF, I WOULD SAY BACK IN 2012 THROUGH 2015. THERE WAS A LOT OF LOT OF THOUGHT THAT THE PROGRAM WAS NOT GOING TO CONTINUE, AND BUT IT HAS CONTINUED. SO I KNOW THAT WE WORK WITH THE DISTRICT ON THAT SEVERAL YEARS, AND THEN THIS PAST TWO YEARS WE HAVE WE [00:05:05] HAVE OFFERED IT TO BLAYLOCK MIDDLE SCHOOL. UH, BUT DUE TO THE ADDITION OF THE DANCE PROGRAM AND REALLY THE BUILDING CAPACITY, THEY DID NOT HAVE SPACE FOR THE PROGRAM AT THIS TIME, BUT THEY HAVE BEEN OFFERED TO IMPLEMENT IT. BUT DR DAVIS AT THIS TIME IS HE HAS NO ROOM FOR IT. THANKS. ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS. DOCTOR AND I'M GONNA ASK IS THIS IS THIS IS A COLLECTIVE DISCOUNTED PE CREDIT . YES SIR. IT'S A PE CREDIT OKAY , AND THE STATE STILL REQUIRES 22 YEARS OF PE CREDIT AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL. OKAY SO WHAT IMPACT DOES THIS HAVE ON THEM? REST OF THE PE CLASSES AND ATHLETICS CLASSES AND CAMPUS, DOES IT? IT HAS NOT HAD A NEGATIVE IMPACT THAT THE P CLASSES ARE FULL, AS WELL AS OUR ATHLETIC CLASSES. AND, UM HMM. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? UM WOULD BE, YOU KNOW, AND WITH IT, UM MS BRADY ASKED ABOUT THE DISCIPLINE THE IMPACT ON STUDENT DISCIPLINE. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WOULD BE OTHER POSITIVE IMPACTS OF THIS PROGRAM? UM, YOU KNOW, MAYBE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT OR OTHER KINDS OF THINGS. WHAT DO YOU WHAT? HAVE THE PRINCIPLES? WHAT DO THEY TELL YOU? UM THAT THEY SEE AS THE BENEFITS OF THE WELL. I CAN TELL YOU THAT IN CONVERSATION WITH THE PRINCIPLES OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS WHEN YOU KNOW THERE WAS THOUGHT THAT MAYBE WE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH STUDENTS GOING THROUGH THE PRINCIPALS AND PARENTS, I WOULD SAY WE'RE WHOLE HARLEY, UH, SPEAKING UP TO KEEP THE PROGRAMS BECAUSE THE STUDENTS REALLY, REALLY DO ENJOY THE PROGRAM. THE DECLINE REALLY HAPPENED SINCE COVID AND HOPEFULLY OBVIOUSLY WE CAN GET MORE KIDS IN THERE. BUT I KNOW THE PRINCIPLES DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THIS PROGRAM, AND THE PARENTS DO NOT ONE OF THOSE PROGRAMS AS A FORMER PRINCIPAL OF BALLET, LIKE I KNOW PARENTS WOULD HEAR QUITE A BIT. YOU KNOW, THEY COME TO ME AS A WHY DON'T WE HAVE THIS PROGRAM? UH SO THEY KNEW ABOUT IT, AND THEY WANTED IT. UH AND YOU KNOW, ONCE AGAIN, IT'S A HIGHLY SOUGHT OUT AFTER PROGRAMMED BY THE KIDS AS WELL AS A PARENT. AND AS AS A FORMER PRINCIPAL YOURSELF. I KNOW THAT YOU DEALT WITH IT AS WELL. I HAD A FEW OF THOSE QUESTIONS MYSELF. YEAH OKAY. ALRIGHT THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD. OKAY DR. HAMILTON THANK YOU. FOR THAT PRESENTATION, DR ELDRIDGE AND THEIR FURTHER ADMINISTRATIONS. YES YES, SIR. ITEM FIVE M ERICA OVERT, SO SHE'S GOING TO PRESENT ON OUR LITERACY SWEET READING PROGRAM. HELLO I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A PRE BOARD MEETING BEFORE. THIS IS VERY EXCITING. OH, I WANTED TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR PROGRAM TITLED INSPIRE LITERACY . WE ALWAYS CALL IT ISLET, AND IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS. PEOPLE HEAR THE NAME BUT DON'T NECESSARILY KNOW WHAT IT'S ABOUT . IT IS A TEACHER LED READING INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR OUR SECONDARY STUDENTS, GRADES SIX THROUGH 10. WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY 1100 STUDENTS IN THE COURSE. AND ABOUT 18 TEACHERS TRAINED FOR THIS, UM, FOR EXAMPLE, WHEN KIDS GET CHOSEN TO BE IN THAT WE LOOK AT DATA AND LOOK AT HOW THEY DID ON STAR THE PREVIOUS YEAR. HOW THEY'RE DOING ON THEIR D C. F A S WHAT THEIR MAP DATA LOOKS LIKE AND IF THEIR SIGNIFICANT SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW GRADE LEVEL THIS IS THE COURSE THAT CAN HELP THEM WITH THAT. UM FOR EXAMPLE, OUR STAR SIXTH GRADERS. THEY HAVE TO HAVE A 7 30, LEX, I'LL IS APPROXIMATELY WITH THE STATE SAYS TO PASS. THE STAR TEST IF IT'S BELOW THAT, THEN WE MIGHT BE LOOKING AT THIS AS AN INTERVENTION THAT WOULD BE FOR THOSE STUDENTS LOOKING AT IT THAT WAY. UM SOME COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM. IT IS VERY TEACHER LEAD. EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY. IT IS SET UP FOR THE TEACHER TO WORK WITH THE STUDENTS. IT HAS A PREFERENCE FOR NO MORE THAN 18. WE HAVE SOME CLASSES WITH 21 IN IT, BUT USUALLY IT'S A SMALLER CLASS FOR THE WAY THAT IT'S STRUCTURED. IT DOES HAVE A PLACEMENT TEST. UM WHEN YOU REALLY LOOK AT NINE BASIC READING SKILLS AND INSTRUCTIONAL LEVELS FOR THEM TO LOOK AT, AND THEN IT PLACES THEM ON AN INDIVIDUAL PATH. FOR PART OF THE PROGRAM, KNOWING SO MANY OF OUR KIDS NEED SOME HELP WITH THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS LIKE WE'VE TALKED ABOUT BEFORE THE FUNNY MIX THE KINETIC AWARENESS , THE PHONICS. UM SOME OF THEM NEED HELP THERE. IT'S LESS THAN ABOUT 10% OF OUR KIDS. AT THIS LEVEL. HOWEVER THE GREAT MAJORITY NEED THE FLUENCY, COMPREHENSION AND VOCABULARY WORK, AND IT ADDRESSES ALL OF THOSE. UM, THE PURPOSE. ONE OF THE REASONS A LOT OF THE READING PROGRAMS DON'T HAVE A LOT OF WRITING WITH THEM ALSO, AND WE KNOW HOW THE STUDENTS GROW. I MEAN, WE'VE TALKED ABOUT YOU CANNOT RIGHT ABOVE YOUR READING LEVEL. WE'VE GOT TO GET THAT READING LEVEL UP FOR THOSE KIDS TO BE ABLE TO WRITE BETTER, AND IT INCORPORATES BOTH OF THOSE TO REALLY LOOK AT THEIR TEXT BASED RESPONSES BUILDING THEIR ACADEMIC VOCABULARY. UM AND WITH THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF BOOKS [00:10:06] INCLUDED WITH THE PROGRAM. UM THERE ARE 3000 AVAILABLE ONLINE THAT HAVE BEEN CHECKED OUT WHAT THEY ARE GOES OVER THE LEXICAL LEVELS THAT OUR STUDENTS NEED. UM AND THEN THE CLASS TIME IS STRUCTURED WITH TIME TO READ WITH THE TEACHER INPUT THE MENTOR TEXT FOR THEM TO MODEL. THE SYSTEMIC, EXPLICIT INSTRUCTION, UM, CLASS COLLABORATION AND THE VOCABULARY COMPONENT AND THEN BEING ABLE TO ACCOUNTABLE TALK WITH EACH OTHER, AND THAT'S HOW IT IS STRUCTURED. DO YOU WANT DATA? CAN WE KEEP GOING? THANK YOU, MR ALBER. QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD, MR BOCEK. UM I DON'T EXPECT THE ANSWER RIGHT NOW. BUT I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN, UM THE DATA OR HEARING OF THE PARTICIPANTS THAT GO THROUGH THAT OR IN THOSE UM, HOW MANY OF THOSE WERE RAISED IN C F B? I S D OKAY, UNLESS YOU KNOW IT RIGHT NOW, BUT I DON'T. I DON'T. BUT THAT WOULD BE GOOD TO KNOW HOW MANY OF THEM ARE IN THE PROGRAM THAT HAVE BEEN IN CFB THEIR ENTIRE EDUCATIONAL CAREER. OKAY JUST THINK THAT WOULD BE HELPFUL. INFORMATION TO, YOU KNOW, REALLY SEE, YOU KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR EARLIER? DEFINITELY PROGRAMS, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE KNOW THAT THIRD GRADE IS THE CRUCIAL YES. AND I WILL. LOOK I KNOW, UM, WHEN WE ORIGINALLY HAD THE PROGRAM, ONE OF THE THINGS ABOUT EYELID IS IT DOES COME WITH A GREAT I MEAN, IT'S PACKAGED TO HAVE THOSE GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS FOR STUDENTS AND IS ALIGNED WITH THE COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS STANDARDS, WHICH IS DIFFICULT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A KID. THAT'S WAY BELOW GRADE LEVEL, AND THAT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WE WANTED THE PROGRAM. IT DOES HAVE AN ISLET YEL. L COMPONENT ALSO THAT A LOT OF OURS USE AND THAT IS A BIG PERCENTAGE OF THE STUDENTS THAT ARE IN IT. I'D HATE TO GIVE YOU A NUMBER BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW, BUT IT IS. DON'T YOU KNOW, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND THE LEFT FIELD. YOU KNOW, FOR TONIGHT, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE HELPFUL OR INTERESTING. UM YES, DATA OR EVEN IF THEY HAVE LEFT AND RETURNED, YES. YOU KNOW, LEFT, LEFT OUR FAMILY AND THEN RETURN . WE WILL GET THAT FOR YOU. MR ERIC. I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE 18 TEACHERS THAT ARE TRAINED ON THE PROGRAM. HOW DOES THAT LOOK LIKE? THEY'RE NORMAL DAY ARE THESE STUDENTS THAT ARE GOING TO THEM FOR LIKE AN ENGLISH CLASS. THE BEAUTY OF THE PROGRAM IS ALSO WE HAVE ONE CAMPUS THAT USES IT FOR THEIR ENGLISH CREDIT AND HAS IT DOUBLE BLOCKED. IT CAN BE THAT IT CAN ALSO BE ISLET 45, WHICH IS A SUPPORT CLASS SO THAT THEY'RE IN THERE ON LEVEL ENGLISH CLASS AND THEN HAVE THIS AS SUPPORT FOR THEM. THAT'S HOW THE MOST OF OUR CAMPUSES USE IT. UM THE 18. THE TEACHERS ARE TRAINED. WE HAVE REPRESENTATIVES COME FROM ISLET DURING OPTIMIZING OUTCOMES. THE AND THEN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, WE GO AND WORK WITH TEACHERS INDIVIDUALLY IN THEIR CLASSROOM TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE ALL THE COMPONENTS. UM LIKE I SAID, THERE IS THE TECHNOLOGY ASPECTS OF WHAT THE STUDENTS ARE USING AND WHAT THE TEACHER HAS AND WHAT SHE CAN PROJECT. UM SO THAT'S A HANDS ON MODELING FOR THEM IF THEY HAVEN'T AFTER THEY'VE HAD THEIR FIRST FULL DAY OF TRAINING WITH IT, SO WHEN WE KEEP TEACHERS IN THE COURSE THEY START. YOU KNOW ANYONE THAT DOES SOMETHING MORE THAN A YEAR GETS MUCH BETTER AT IT. UM WE HAVE A LOT OF THIS YEAR WE HAD A BUNCH OF NEW TEACHERS JUST FROM TURNOVER THAT WERE BEING TRAINED FOR THE COURSE SO JUST TO CLARIFY THESE AREN'T TEACHERS THAT WOULD BE TEACHING A CLASSROOM FULL OF ON LEVEL STUDENTS AND THEN HAPPEN TO HAVE A FEW STUDENTS THAT HAVE THESE NEEDS. THIS TEACHER WOULD BE DEDICATED TO A CLASSROOM OF THE STUDENTS. YES BUT WE END UP HAVING IS USUALLY, UM, I'LL GIVE AN EXAMPLE FOR BUSH MIDDLE SCHOOL. ONE OF THE TEACHERS DOES EYELET FOR SIXTH GRADE EYELET FOR SEVENTH GRADE EYELID FOR EIGHTH GRADE, THEN THE OTHER HALF OF HER SCHEDULE IS ON LEVEL ENGLISH CLASSES. BUT SHE'S NOT HAVING TO WEAR TWO DIFFERENT HATS IN THE MIDDLE OF ONE CLASSROOM. OKAY, OKAY. THANK YOU. QUESTIONS FROM THE SIDE, MISS BRADY. SO YOU ACTUALLY ANSWERED SEVERAL OF MY QUESTIONS AND THAT, UM, AND YOUR PRESENTATION ONE OF THEM WAS I WAS CONCERNED THAT WE ARE WE USING THIS A FIDELITY OR WE JUST USING THIS SUPPORT. WHEN THE KIDS HAVE TIME. THERE'S FIVE MINUTES EXTRA IN CLASS, BUT NOT EVERY DAY. IT IS NOT USED LIKE THAT AT ALL. IT IS A SEPARATE CLASS. UM LAST YEAR. WE HAD A FEW PLACES THAT WANTED TO PILOT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT COMES WITH THE PROGRAM. THAT IS NOT AN EXTRA CHARGES. AN ISLET 20. AH INTERVENTION WHERE IT GIVES THEM ACCESS TO THE BOOKS. SOME TRIED TO DO THAT IN ADVISORY OR AT THE END OF THEIR CLASS THAT THEY HAD IT JUST TO GIVE THEM ACCESS TO BOOKS, BUT IT WAS NOT PART OF THE PROGRAM FOR ISLET 45. OKAY AND I WAS GONNA ASK YOU ABOUT THE L E L L COMPONENT BECAUSE I DID SEE THAT ON THAT THAT WAS AVAILABLE. SO WE ARE USING THAT WE'RE USING THAT WITH FIDELITY, WHETHER EMERGENT BILINGUAL STUDENTS AND I THINK BELIEVE IT WAS LAST YEAR. IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE YEAR BEFORE. ARE BILINGUAL. ES EL DEPARTMENT DID PURCHASE LEX EAH FOR THE TEACHERS THEY WERE ALREADY USED TO USING ISLET. DLL SO SOME OF THEM GOT THAT CHOICE ON WHICH PROGRAM THEY WANTED TO GO WITH. SO WE DO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF [00:15:04] MIX DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL. I THINK A LOT OF THE NEWCOMERS PREFERRED THE LEXI A PROGRAM I WISH OLIVIA. WE'RE ALREADY HERE. UM AND THEN OTHERS THAT ARE IN LIKE SL 123 WERE LIKE THIS IS A BETTER FIT FOR WHAT WE NEED IN HERE. OKAY GOOD. UM, AND BUT I'D BE VERY INTERESTED IN THE DATA OF WHERE THESE KIDS STARTED WHERE THEY ARE NOW HOW MUCH WE'VE GROWN. AND HOW IS THAT SHOWING? HOW IS IT REPRESENTING IN THE DOCS AND MAP SCORES? THAT TYPE OF YES, WE WERE LOOKING AT THIS IS ANECDOTAL. UH WE HAVE. WHEN I HAD MY LAST MEETING WITH THE ISLET REPRESENTATIVE. THEY HAD DONE CERTIFICATES FOR OUR KIDS, AND IT WAS REALLY NEAT TO LOOK AT. I WANT TO SAY IT WAS 38 STUDENTS HAVE ONE STUDENT THAT WAS ABSENT. UM THAT GAINED OVER A YEAR IN OUR FIRST SEMESTER. AND IT WAS NEAT. THEY MADE THEM CERTIFICATES AND WE'RE GOING AROUND AND GIVING THEM TO THE KIDS TO KNOW THAT WE ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS AND REALLY LOOKING AT YOUR DATA. THE END OF YOUR ASSESSMENT ISN'T UNTIL THIS AFTER THE SECOND WEEK OF MAY. IT CAN BE GIVEN, SO WE'LL KNOW A LITTLE BIT MORE AT THE END OF THE YEAR, BUT IT'S BEEN NEAT TO SEE SOME OF THEM AND ONCE THEY'VE GROWN LIKE THAT, THEN THEY'RE NOT IN THE CLASS THE NEXT YEAR. OUR WHOLE GOAL IS TO MAKE THIS COURSE GO AWAY AND NOT HAVE CHILDREN THAT NEED IT. SO WE'RE TRYING TO DO SOME LITTLE INCENTIVE THINGS AND HAVE THEM REALIZE WE ARE PAYING ATTENTION. IT'S NOT THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE IN THIS COURSE FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES JUST BECAUSE THEY HAPPEN TO BE IN AT ONE YEAR. DO WE HAVE DATA FROM PREVIOUS YEARS AND THIS? WE GOT THIS IN 2000. I WAS LOOKING AT THAT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MAYBE A LITTLE TOO FINE GRAIN. UM THE DATA THAT THEY SHARE WITH US, AND IT'S ACCESSIBLE TO THE DISTRICT ADMIN AND CAMPUS ADMIN AND YOU CAN SEE EXACTLY WHERE THE STUDENT IS. IT HAS WEEKLY UPDATES. ON SO YOU CAN SEE LIKE THEIR LEXICAL LEVEL GOING UP OR IF A KID IS GOING DOWN. IT'S LIKE, OKAY, WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO WITH THIS STUDENT? IS THIS PROGRAM WORKING? IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE WE NEED TO OR IS IT JUST A BAD WEEK FOR THE STUDENT? UM BUT AS WE LOOKED AT IT, THE MOST OF OUR STUDENTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL. THERE'S TWO LEVELS THEY'RE CALLED LEVEL D AND E. IT'S JUST THE TYPES OF READING RIGHT NOW. THE LEXX STYLE GROWTH IN SEVENTH GRADE FOR OUR STUDENTS, ON AVERAGE IS OVER 150 POINTS. THE LEXICAL GROWTH IN EIGHTH GRADE IS OVER. 70 POINTS PER STUDENT. UM SO WE LOOK AT THAT, AND I KNOW EVERY KID'S NOT AN AVERAGE, BUT IT'S NICE TO KIND OF SEE THAT AND GO. OKAY. WE'RE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. NOW WE DRILL DOWN TO THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS ON WHERE THEY ARE. THANK YOU. THANK YOU. IT'S BENAVIDEZ. THANK YOU, UM. DOES IT SUPPORT 63 12 OR 3? 11 6 THROUGH 10 10? OKAY AND THEN ALSO, SINCE WE'VE HAD THIS FOR A WHILE, IS THIS A RENEWAL THE OR DO WE BUY IT EVERY YEAR? YES, IT'S A RENEWAL FEE. IT'S A LITTLE BIT BETTER OF A DEAL THAN IF WE WERE BUYING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME WE STARTED USING IT IN 2018. PRIOR TO THAT WE'VE USED READ 1 80 READ 1 80 QUADRUPLE THEIR COSTS. UM AND THIS HAD THOSE SAME COMPONENTS THAT WERE BENEFICIAL THAT WAS TEACHER DIRECTED. IT WASN'T ALL JUST A COMPUTER THINKING IT COULD TEACH A CHILD TO READ. SO THAT WAS ONE OF THE REASONS WE MADE THIS CHANGE TO IT. OKAY. THANK YOU. MISS HATFIELD. THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR THE ANSWERED A LOT OF QUESTIONS TONIGHT. IT'S VERY HELPFUL. UM AS WE MOVE FORWARD, I THINK IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO HAVE SOME OF THAT DATA IN THE BOARD REPORT SO WE CAN CONTINUE TO LOOK AT THOSE GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES BECAUSE IT'S VERY HELPFUL TO HAVE THE DATA BECAUSE IT SHOWS HOW WE'RE SPENDING OUR MONEY. ESPECIALLY YES, THANK YOU. WE CAN DO THAT. THANK YOU. OTHER QUESTIONS. HE LAUGHED LOOKING RIGHT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THANK YOU. VERY INFORMATIVE PRESENTATION. SHANNON. ALRIGHT WE'LL MOVE ON TO AGENDA ITEM NUMBER FOUR, WHICH IS A BRIEFING SESSION WITH [4. Briefing Session with Administrative Staff Regarding the Posted Agenda for the Regular Board Meeting Scheduled for 7:00 PM on May 4, 2023] ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF REGARDING POSTED AGENDA FOR THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING SCHEDULED FOR SEVEN O'CLOCK TONIGHT.
